The Infamous Black Bird Southern Oregon History, Revised

Pinto Colvig--the "Bulletin Boob"

Pinto  Colvig's career as a big-city newspaper cartoonist/columnist began in May 1919 when the San Francisco Bulletin hired him.  Links to Pinto's first few months' columns are below.

At the
Bulletin Pinto assumed the persona of a Nevada hick, even though his sojourn in that state had lasted less than a year--and had ended five years previously. The fictional town of Windy Gap (a reference to Reno's Washoe Zephyr) bears only passing resemblance to Pinto's Oregon home towns of Jacksonville and Medford, though the similarity becomes more pronounced when the artist reminisces about "the old days."

The "chalk plate process" was used in small newspapers, like the Nevada Rockroller, to prepare illustrations for printing. The artist would scribe the design through a thin layer of chalk, or plaster, and then pour in molten type metal to produce a printing plate. At the Bulletin, Pinto drew his illustrations in pen and ink.
