The Infamous Black Bird Southern Oregon History, Revised

J. S. Howard Store Ledger
A clients' name index to a ledger with entries January 1, 1875 through 1878, archived by the Southern Oregon Historical Society.

The entries are not in J. S. Howard's handwriting; newspaper accounts mention his teenage children Nettie and George clerking in the store. Entries January 1875 through May 1876 are headlined "Ashland," suggesting he operated a store in that town--a fact unremarked upon by the newspapers in that period. (Ashland didn't have a newspaper at the time.) His store after April 1, 1876 was on California Street in Jacksonville, Oregon.

See the notes on his merchandise at the bottom of the page. Compare with the ledger from his 1889-1891 Medford store, annotated here.
