September 1878 Wed. 18--Left old home at 1:10 o'clock and got to Leachman's Thu. 19--Left Leachman's and got [to] Anderson's ranch west of Roseville Fri. 20--Left Anderson ranch & passed through Lincoln & Sheridan. Camped at Mercy's ranch west of Wheatland Sat. 21--Left Mercy's & got to Marysville at noon, stopped ½ day Sun. 22--Left Marysville, passed through Live Oak Station, stopped ¼ mile north [of] Biggs Station Mon. 23--Left Biggs & come to Stillman's 4 miles east of Chico Tue. 24--Left Stillman's, passed through Chico & stopped 14 miles northwest of Chico Wed. 25--Left 14 Mile House, passed Vina Station & stopped at Cone's ranch, 4 miles east of Red Bluff Thu. 26--Left Cone's ranch, passed through Red Bluff, crossed Sacramento River and camped at Cottonwood Station Hall Fri. 27--Left Cottonwood S. and come [to] Horsetown & camped at Centerville--Paul De Prey Sat. 28--Left Centerville, come through Muletown, Shasta & Whiskeytown & camped at Tower House Sun. 29--Left Tower House & stopped at the toll house on Trinity Mountain, rained all day like hell--Tiny Mon. 30--Left Tiny's & got [to] Carr's T. Wed. 4th--Shucked corn all day. Thu. 5th--Shucked corn all day. Went to the Smith girls' farewell party in the evening. (3) Fri. 6th--Grubbed all day Sat. 7th--Worked at grubbing ¼ day in forenoon. Commenced my cabin in afternoon. Showery today Sun. 8th--Worked on floor of my cabin all day Mon. 9th--Shucked corn all day. Cliff Smith commenced to plow. (4) Tue. 10th--Loafed in forenoon. Tore down old house in afternoon Wed. 11th--Finished tearing down house in forenoon & took 100 lbs. flour up to Coverdales. Afternoon hauled old house. (5) Thu. 12th--Made corn crib in forenoon. Fri. 10th--Picked apples all day & went to show & dance in the evening. Sat. 11th--Awful cold in the morning. Picked up cider apples in forenoon. Afternoon marked 7 pigs cut 3 of them. I grubbed all day 1 bottle ink .13 Total $17.88 Fri. 24th--Alice & Grant was up in the evening. Picked up apples for hogs in forenoon. Afternoon, Andy & I finished hauling corn & fodder. Grant & I got a load of cow feed. I sent my watch to town by King. Sat. 25th--I picked up apples for hogs in forenoon. Afternoon I helped Andy to haul one load of fodder & Andy & I picked one load of apples & hauled in a load of potatoes. Sun. 26th--Forenoon, cut some brush at the end of the cabin & was shooting at a mark. Afternoon, started to fix up a mantle board. (26) Mon. 27th--Andy & I went to Phoenix to mill. Took 41 bushels of wheat. Cold in the morning. Tue. 28th--Andy & I come home. Stopped in Jacksonville a while. Cold all day. 018 Wed. 29th--Grant & I unloaded the flour in morning. Boss Grant & I marked 4 pigs castrated one. Boss gave Prince a hell of a wailing Thu. 30th--Grant & I picked up cider apples in forenoon. Afternoon I chopped down one of them black oaks that stood by the house. Thanksgiving day December 1882 Fri. 1st--Chopped wood all forenoon. Afternoon took 3 bushels of apples to Ned Hutt, 4 bushels to Fred Otten, 65 lbs. wheat to Draper & 45 lbs. cabbage. Sold R. A. Cook 30 lbs. Cabbage. Sent Angie McClellan books to her. (27,28,29) Sat. 2nd--Forenoon, hauled two loads of cow feed, plowed out some spuds & picked up one load of hog apples Afternoon, picked up two load of hog apples & hauled in some potatoes. 019 Sun. 3rd--Built a wood shed on the end of my cabin. Boss moved the site on my gun so it shoots better. Mon. 4th--Boss & I plowed out some potatoes & dug potatoes all day. Tue. 5th--Boss & I dug potatoes all day. Wed. 6th--Boss & I dug potatoes all day. Grant picked them up in the afternoon. Thu. 7th--Mr. Hosmer & I dug spuds in forenoon. Afternoon hauled 2 loads of spuds 2 loads of carrots & one load of cabbage. Fri. 8th--Grant & I hauled 2 loads of wood. Hosmer, Andy & I butchered 3 hogs. I killed a little hawk. Sat. 9th--I took 250 graham flour up A. Orme Sr. & collected $28.50 for the boss in forenoon. Afternoon went over to Carr's with a hog & took one to Morris'. Alice was up & put up a curtain to my window & straightened up things generally. Alice is a way-up-girl. (30,31) Sun. 10th--I chopped down a dry pine & sawed one load of wood & hauled it. Mrs. Hosmer cut my hair. 020 Mon. 11th--Boss Andy & I cleaning out the creek. Tue. 12th--Boss Andy & I cleaning out the creek. Wed. 13th--Boss Andy & I cleaning out the creek. Wed. 7th--Chopped wood in forenoon. Grant & I hauled wood in afternoon. Thu. 8th--Boss & I buried the steer in forenoon. Chopped wood in the afternoon. Fri. 9th--Chopped wood & helped Boss put the rafters in the new house. Sat. 10th--Chopped wood in forenoon. Grant & I hauled wood in afternoon. Sun. 11th--Fixed hearth in cabin in forenoon. I got ready to go after shakes. (43) Mon. 12th--Went down to Browns after shakes. Hauled 1020. Rained coming home. I got kicked. Tue. 13th--Packed all day. Wed. 14th--Tinkered all day. Snow 7 inches deep. Thu. 15th--Went up in the mountains hunting hogs. Did not see any. Got awful leg weary. Annie & Alice. (44) 026 was up this evening to my cabin & we past a couple of hours very pleasantly. Fri. 16th--Fixed up mantle board in forenoon. Afternoon hauled up shakes. Sat. 17th--Cut down big black oak for stovewood. Sun. 18th--Loafed all day. Mon. 19th--Cut wood all day. Tue. 20th--Chopped wood all day. Wed. 21st--Cut wood all day. Thu. 22nd--Cut wood all day. Fri. 23rd--Cut wood all day. Sat. 24th--Chopped wood all day. Sun. 25th--Finished making porch to my cabin. Mon. 26th--Andy, Boss & me grubbed all day. Tue. 27th--Andy & me grubbed all day. (45) Sun. 4th--Fixed up wash bench & shaved in forenoon. Mrs. Hosmer was here today & also Alice & Annie was up here a couple of hours. Boss & I went over to Draper's in afternoon. Sat. 10th--Harrowed in forenoon. Commenced to plow in the old garden in the afternoon. Sun. 11th--Loafed all day. Mon. 12th--Plowed in forenoon. Broke plow beam. Harrowed & cultivated in afternoon. (48) Tue. 13th--Hauled 3 loads of stovewood in forenoon. Plowed and harrowed the rest of the day. Wed. 14th--Plowed in forenoon. Afternoon went to school meeting for the purpose of taking a vote to see whether they would move the school house. 14 votes for moving & 12 to let it stay where it is. Alice & Annie was up this evening & stayed a couple of hours. (49) Sun. 18th--Loafed all day. A and A was here in forenoon, also Mr. Bailey. (50) Mon. 19th--Plowed in forenoon. Harrowed in afternoon. Tue. 20th--Harrowed all forenoon. Brushed in Timothy seed and ground some apples for cider. Got $10.00 from Mr. Hosmer. Wed. 21st--Made cider & burned some brush. Grant got hurt with the cider mill. Thu. 22nd--Fixed the road so I could haul rails. Worked all day with out any dinner. (51) Fri. 23rd--Hauled 125 rails today. Sam McKee came over with me. (52) Sat. 24th--Hauled 160 rails. 029 Sun. 25th--Fixed some tin on fireplace in forenoon. Went up in Iron Gulch in afternoon. Mon. 26th--Shaved shakes & killed 1 digger squirrel. (53) Tue. 27th--Plowed in the orchard. Wed. 28th--Plowed and leveled in the orchard. Thu. 29th--Finished leveling in the orchard. Harrowed and brushed in the Alfalfa seed.
