The Infamous Black Bird Southern Oregon History, Revised

Medford's Golden Anniversary Celebration

THIS CITY LAID OUT 50 YRS. AGO
Fifty years ago yesterday the new town site was laid out on the Oregon & California's line for the location of the city of Medford, according to a note in the Fifty Years Ago column of The Oregonian.

The small item, plucked from that newspaper of February 17, 1884, reads:
A new town site has been laid out on the Oregon & California's line, nearly completed to Phoenix, on which will be built the future great city of Medford.
Medford Mail Tribune, February 18, 1934, page 10

That's it. The anniversaries of the town's incorporation the next year passed unnoticed. The assertion that the town was "laid out" on February 17, 1884 is in error, by the way.
